selfish humanity will die
my theory of globalisation is that it evens the playing field for the poor, though the wealthy suffer. outsourcing (or offshoring if it leaves the country) is part of globalisation. what many americans forget is that for 95% of us, being "poor" in america is nothing like being poor in india. you still have ways to get food and live somewhere. you're not living in an overcrowded city with dirt streets, a ineffective sewer system, and a rampaging monkey problem. "sending" jobs to india lifts them above that level, and gives their country the opportunity, through higher tax revenues, to improve the lot of all indians (whether that actually happens depends on their politicians, not ours).
yes, this sucks for us, and it's easy for me to say because i have a job (they tried to offshore us but the process proved uneconomical), but it is the way of the future. cross-border, cross-cultural co-operation will bring the world closer together. those extremists battling to make their fundamentalist views dominant are fighting progress, are fighting humanity, are fighting the future. the world will come together. people will unite. history will continue. they can't stop the internet, they can't stop globalisation, they can't stop progress.
what we should be doing isn't fighting offshoring and outsourcing. we should be fighting borders. we should be fighting nations. nafta is a good thing if the boundaries between canada and mexico fall and we become more integrated. you can say the poor will drag down the rich, but the rich will in turn lift the poor. are we so selfish that we'll let africa starve just so we can keep our tedious, dull jobs? are we so selfish that we'll deport illegal immigrants just because they're taking jobs the rest of us don't want to do?
i am proud to be american because it is closest to my ideal that i have found. it is not ideal, and the practice of america is tarnishing the concept, but it's still better than what's around. i'll admit it's not complete. america is not the leader it once was, and the world is not even remotely united enough to do what it needs in order for mankind to survive. too often people focus on the individual and not enough on the species. we can be free even while we strive together for a greater common goal. the problem is, we're all too selfish to unite. we want to be individuals, we want to be non-conformists. we want to be free, but we don't want to make the sacrifices required to maintain that. thus, humanity will die out because it is too selfish to unite behind the social and scientific endeavors necessary to progress beyond earth. we are unwilling to transcend ourselves, and this is our doom.
